HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) remains a formidable global health challenge, affecting millions worldwide. This virus weakens the immune system, leaving individuals susceptible to various infections and diseases. To address this critical issue, Sree Abirami College of Nursing in Coimbatore organized a World AIDS Awareness Day observation on December 5th, 2023, aimed at enlightening and engaging its student body in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

World AIDS Day and Its Significance:

World AIDS Day, observed annually on December 1st, is a global initiative to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS. It serves as a day to stand in solidarity with those living with HIV, honor the memory of those lost to AIDS-related illnesses, and advocate for continued efforts in prevention, treatment, and support. The theme for 2023, “LET COMMUNITIES LEAD,” emphasizes the crucial role communities play in the response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Event Highlights:

The event commenced at 11 am with a thought-provoking guest lecture by Dr. V. Shanmuga Sundaram, MDDVL, Professor and Head of the Department of Dermatology at Karpagam Faculty of Medical Science and Research, Coimbatore. Dr. Arvin Babu, the Dean of Administration at Sree Abirami Institutions, Dr. Renuka, Principal of Sree Abirami College of Nursing, and Prof. Gandhimathi, Vice Principal of Sree Abirami College of Nursing, graced the occasion.

A prayer song and a warm welcome speech by Prof. Sarala.M set the tone for the seminar, with attendees receiving bouquets as a gesture of hospitality.

In-Depth Discussion:

The seminar delved into the current scenario of HIV/AIDS, covering causes, symptoms, management, and prevention of the disease. Dr. V. Shanmuga Sundaram shared invaluable insights on handling HIV patients within the community without neglect, drawing on case histories and life experiences. The second half of the session featured an interactive live question session, allowing students to deepen their understanding of HIV/AIDS and the crucial role of healthcare professionals in both hospital and community settings.

Appreciation and Gratitude:

The chief guest, Dr. V. Shanmuga Sundaram, received a memento as a token of appreciation for his insightful contributions. Mrs. Rajeswari, a tutor at Sree Abirami College of Nursing, extended the vote of gratitude, expressing appreciation for the valuable knowledge shared during the seminar.

Conclusion:

The event concluded on a poignant note with the National Anthem, symbolizing unity and solidarity in the collective effort against HIV/AIDS.
