Alumni BEYOND THE CAMPUS Webinar – Topic of Social Media’s Impact on Teen Mental Health

Freshers, B.Sc IV Year students, B.Sc II Semester students, and Interns.
The webinar titled “Alumni BEYOND THE CAMPUS” was held on February 28, 2025, with a focus on the crucial topic of “Social Media’s Impact on Teen Mental Health.” The event aimed to leverage the experiences of alumni to enlighten current students about contemporary issues in the mental health landscape.
Mrs. Akila N.J, a distinguished alumna of Sree Abirami College of Nursing, led an engaging session that addressed the various dimensions of social media’s influence on teenagers’ mental health. She shared insights based on both her academic background and personal experiences, illustrating how social media can serve as a double-edged sword.
Mrs. Akila highlighted the benefits of social media, such as enhanced connectivity, peer support, and access to information. These platforms can foster a sense of community and provide a space for self-expression.
However, she emphasized the darker aspects, including cyberbullying, social comparison, and the pressure to conform to unrealistic standards. These factors can contribute to anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem among teens.
The session also included practical strategies for managing social media use. Mrs. Akila encouraged participants to cultivate a balanced relationship with social media, engage in digital detox periods, and seek professional help when necessary.
The webinar concluded with an interactive question-and-answer segment, where participants actively engaged with Mrs. Akila, seeking advice on specific scenarios and sharing their experiences related to social media.
The “Alumni BEYOND THE CAMPUS” webinar proved to be an invaluable opportunity for students to gain insights into a pressing issue affecting their generation. Through the expertise of Mrs. Akila N.J and the guidance of Dr. Magarani. S, participants left the session better equipped to understand and address the complexities of social media’s impact on mental health. The event not only fostered a deeper connection between alumni and current students but also underscored the college’s commitment to promoting mental well-being in the community.
