Seminar Taken By: Shri. S . THANGAPNDIAN (Deputy Controller of Patents & Designs Patent Office, Chennai)
Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) encompass a set of legal protections granted to individuals and organizations for their intangible creations. These creations can take various forms, including inventions, literary and artistic works, trademarks, and more. The primary types of IPR include patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, industrial designs, geographical indications, plant varieties, and layout designs of integrated circuits. IPR laws aim to recognize and safeguard the economic and moral rights of creators and innovators by granting them exclusive rights to control, use, and profit from their intellectual creations.
Session 3 :
TOPIC: Public Health and IP Policy Aspect and Access to Medicines
Seminar Conducted By, Mrs. Preethi (Reg Patent Agent IPR Consultant, Chennai.)
Public health and intellectual property (IP) policy intersect in the context of access to medicines. IP laws, such as patents, can impact the availability and affordability of life-saving drugs. While IP encourages innovation, it can also create barriers to accessing essential medications, especially in low-income countries. Striking a balance between protecting IP rights and ensuring access to medicines is vital for public health. Flexibilities like compulsory licensing and generic drug production have been used to address this issue. An effective public health and IP policy framework must prioritize equitable access to medicines to combat diseases and promote global well-being.
Session 4 :
TOPIC: Patent System India and National Biodiversity –Biotechnological invention.
Conducted By, Dr. R. Bhanumathi (Deputy Controller of Patents & Designs Patent Office, Chennai)
In India, the patent system governs the protection of intellectual property, including biotechnological inventions. The National Biodiversity Act regulates the utilization of biological resources and associated knowledge. Biotechnological inventions derived from India’s biodiversity require compliance with both patent laws and biodiversity regulations to ensure ethical and legal use of natural resources.
