January is globally recognized as Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to spreading knowledge about the prevention and early detection of cervical cancer. Embracing the theme “Learn, Prevent, Screen,” the Obstetrics and Gynecology (OBG) Nursing Department of Sree Abirami College of Nursing in Coimbatore organized a comprehensive three-day program to educate and engage the community on this critical health issue.
**Day One: Student Engagement through Competition**
The awareness campaign commenced on January 22, 2024, with a student competition focused on journal article presentations about cervical cancer. Seven enthusiastic students from the second and third years of the B.Sc. The nursing program participated, showcasing their research and understanding of the subject. The event was judged by two esteemed faculty members: Dr. Jaya Bharathi, the Academic Dean, and Dr. Renuka, the Principal of the college.
The presentations were evaluated on depth of research, clarity, and relevance. Mr. Abishek Jothi secured the first prize, while Ms. Reena from the third year clinched the second prize. Both winners were honored with prizes and certificates, acknowledging their exemplary efforts. On January 23, from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., the college hosted a guest lecture in the nursing auditorium, drawing an audience of 300 students and faculty members. The session featured Dr. Premalatha, a renowned consultant gynecologist and colposcopist from the Coimbatore Colposcopy Centre in RS Puram. The event began with a soulful prayer song, followed by a warm welcome address delivered by Professor Mrs. Magarani.
Dr. Umadevi, the Managing Director of Sree Abirami Institutions, shared inspirational words that set the tone for the lecture. Dr. Premalatha then took the stage to deliver an in-depth presentation on “Prevention of Cervical Cancer.” She meticulously discussed the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine and its pivotal role in preventing cervical cancer. The final day, January 24, was dedicated to a mass awareness program and cervical cancer screening, organized in collaboration with the Arisipalayam Primary Health Centre (PHC). The main objective was to focus on prevention strategies and encourage community participation. Over 60 community members attended the event, reflecting a strong interest and concern for women’s health issues.
Dr. Pradeepa, the Block Medical Officer at Arisipalayam PHC, served as the resource person. She delivered an informative talk highlighting the preventive aspects of cervical cancer, stressing early detection and lifestyle modifications. Students played a significant role by engaging the public through various interactive programs such as traditional folk performances like “Villupattu,” skits, and health talks. These creative approaches made the information accessible and engaging for all attendees.
The program culminated with a cervical cancer screening for five women, all of whom fortunately tested negative. This initiative underscored the college’s commitment to not only educate but also provide essential health services to the community.
